Greenjacket Proves to Reduce Outages and Improve Reliability

Alberta, Canada – June 13, 2012 - Cantega Technologies, a leading manufacturer of "Greenjacket" an electrical cover-up for substations in both the electrical utility and industrial sectors of the marketplace, has been named AltaLink's preferred solution for reducing substation wildlife contacts and improving overall transmission system reliability.  AltaLink credits Greenjacket for its dramatic 95% reduction in bird and other wildlife outages since the covers has been installed in 2006.

AltaLink, Canada's only fully independent transmission company, owns more than half of Alberta's transmission grid and serves 85% of the provincial population.  AltaLink is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 7,000 miles of transmission lines and 280 substations in Alberta.  According to AltaLink, the Greenjacket program has resulted in the System Average Interruption Frequency Indexy (SAIFI) and the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) improvement of up to 2.7% and 7.7% respectively.

"As Chief Operating Officer, I am very focused on making investment decisions that bring value to our customers," commented Dennis Frehlich, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of AltaLink. "Our investment decision in Greenjacket to reduce wildlife outages at our substations was a very easy decision.  It is very cost effective, has consistently delivered 90% to 95% outage reductions at our installed sites, saves customers downtime, and protects wildlife.  There are few investments in our business that achieve those results."

According to the statistics in studies from both EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), animal caused outages can be attributed to at least 18 Billion dollars in lost economy each year and considering the fact that many  "Unknown" outages are also animal caused, that number could be significantly higher! That price tag is bringing many utility execs to appreciate what the inventor of electricity, Benjamin Franklin realized many years ago- "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Cantega Founder and President Marty Niles added, "The key to preventing animal caused outages is a better fitting product. Gaps leave the system compromised and susceptible to animal contact and can often create shelter for smaller animals and bugs, which attract larger predators. Greenjacket works because it covers risk points completely and eliminates opportunities for animal nesting and contact. Significant cost savings are realized in outage related downtime, repairs and labor overtime costs that are a typical result of bird or animal contact with energized equipment."

The product of choice for many of North America's largest electric utility companies is Greenjacket, manufactured by Cantega Technologies and distributed in the U.S. through Salisbury by Honeywell. Greenjacket is unique in that in involves a technology that allows the company to customize covers for a complete fit over all risk points. There is no "one size fits all" approach that effectively covers gaps and risk points – precise fit Greenjacket covers solve this problem.  In addition, they are the only company that has the ability to install a comprehensive system of covers in an energized yard. The cost savings on avoiding both forced and unforced outages is significant, as is the savings on equipment repair and replacement. This product has been so effective in preventing animal contact, several companies have adopted Greenjacket as the standard for their animal mitigation strategy.

About Cantega

Cantega Technologies was founded in 2001 by a power lineman who knew first hand that there was a better way to build power system protection and improve reliability. Martin Niles had 25 years in the field and had witnessed the damage and disruption caused by bird and animal contact with electrical equipment. He recognized the value of customized fitting covers as opposed to the "one size fits all" approach and he realized that having a product that can be installed quickly in an energized environment added tremendous value to utilities. The Greenjacket engineered solution is the result of those observations. In Canada, Greenjacket is used extensively by AltaLink, as well as BC Hydro, Fortis, Hydro One, Hydro Quebec, SaskPower, Manitoba Hydro and other utilities. Industrial customers such as Shell and Anadarko have also adopted the use of Greenjacket where the cost of an outage is measured in lost revenue and can amount to millions for a brief outage. In the U.S. Cantega recently partnered with Salisbury by Honeywell to distribute Greenjacket and now has projects in California, Colorado, Washington DC and Wyoming.
