Greenjacket Proves to Reduce Outages and Improve Reliability

Alberta, Canada – June 13, 2012 – Cantega Technologies, a leading manufacturer of “Greenjacket” an electrical cover-up for substations in both the electrical utility and industrial sectors of the marketplace, has been named AltaLink’s preferred solution for reducing substation wildlife contacts and improving overall transmission system reliability.  AltaLink credits Greenjacket for its dramatic 95% reduction in bird and other wildlife outages since the covers has been installed in 2006.


AltaLink, Canada’s only fully independent transmission company, owns more than half of Alberta’s transmission grid and serves 85% of the provincial population.  AltaLink is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 7,000 miles of transmission lines and 280 substations in Alberta.  According to AltaLink, the Greenjacket program has resulted in the System Average Interruption Frequency Indexy (SAIFI) and the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) improvement of up to 2.7% and 7.7% respectively.

According to the statistics in studies from both EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), animal caused outages can be attributed to at least 18 Billion dollars in lost economy each year and considering the fact that many  “Unknown” outages are also animal caused, that number could be significantly higher! That price tag is bringing many utility execs to appreciate what the inventor of electricity, Benjamin Franklin realized many years ago- “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
